How to Fix Windows 10 100% Disk Usage Issue
How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10? The solutions are different because of different causes. Users need to choose a proper one according to the specific cause. 3 ways are listed here.
1. Fix Your StorAHCI.sys Driver
It’s known that the reset of the disk controller may cause this problem. However, the reset of the disk controller is easily caused in Windows 10 running with the inbox StorAHCI.sys driver by some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express (AHCI PCIe) models.
The specific process is as follows: when Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) mode is enabled, the Solid-state drive (SSD) can’t complete input/output process properly due to a firmware bug. As a result, the Windows storage stack will attempt to reset the disk controller after waiting on unresponsive read/write for a period of time.
So, the solution to Windows 10 100% disk usage caused by reset of the disk controller is to disable MSI mode in the registry.
Follow the steps below to disable MSI mode.
Step 1: Press “Win+R” to call out the Run box, and then type “devmgmt.msc” and hit Enter.
Step 2: Find “Standard SATA AHCI Controller” under “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers”, and then right-click it to get a drop-down menu, and finally click the “properties”.
Step 3: Click “Driver” and then click “Driver Details”. The “storahci.sys” file in the list indicates that you are running the inbox driver.
Step 4: click the “Details” tab and select “Device instance path” from the Property drop-down menu. Please remember the character that starts with PCI\VEN under Value, which will be useful in the following step.
Step 5: Type “regedit” in the Run box to open the registry editor.
Step6: Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI”, and then select the folder whose name appears under Value in step 4, and then continue to navigate to “Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties”. Finally, right-click “MSISupported” to change the Value data from “1” to “0”.
Please remember to reboot your computer to see whether this method works for high disk usage Windows 10.
2. Change Settings in Google Chrome and Skype
Sometimes, an improper combination of Skype and Google Chrome browser settings can also cause 100% disk usage issue in Windows 10. So, we could change their settings.
Step 1: Open Google Chrome and go to “settings”. Scroll down to the page bottom to click “Advanced”. Turn off the “Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly” option in the “Privacy and security” settings and the “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” option in “System” settings.
Step 2: Close your Skype and then open Windows Explorer to navigate to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\”. Then, right-click the “Skype.exe” and choose “Properties”, and next, click “security” tab and select “Edit”.
Step 3: Highlight “ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES” and then check the “Write” box. Finally, click “Apply”and “OK” to save the changes.
Remember to check your disk usage in Task Manager to see if this works. If not, you could uninstall Skype and update Chrome to V64 and above versions.
3. Disable Antivirus Software
Sometimes, some antivirus software may cause 100% disk usage problem while your Windows is not affected by virus. In this situation, you could disable it temporarily. If the disk usage problem of your computer relieves a lot, you may need to contact the software vendor for some help.
If the software vendor can’t help you, you can uninstall the antivirus application. You don’t need to worry about your computer’s security too much, because Microsoft has an automatically enabled default anti-malware, Windows Defender. It could protect your computer enough.
